The study on antioxidative effects and quality comparison lf Ligusticum chuanxiong and Cnidium officinale (1)

Abstract
For comparative study of Ligusticum shuanxiong and Cnidium officinale on vasodilatation effect, experiments such as lipid peroxidation of liver tissues, changes in xanthine oxdase, and aldehyde oxidase activities and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were carried out. furthermore, amino acid composition and quantitation, total nitrogen content of the Ligusticum chuanxiong and Cnidium officinale were also compared, and the next results were observed as follows;
1. When the effects of Ligusticum chuanxiong and Cnidium officinale on lipid peroxidation were examined, although both of Ligusticum chuan- xiong and Cnidium officinale showed the same inhibitory activities compared to the control, there is no significant differneces between two subjects.
2. When the effects of Ligusticum chuanxing and Cnidium officinale on xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase activities were examined, Cnidium officinale showed higher activity than that of Ligusticum chuanxiong.
3. On hydroxy radical scavenging activity, both of Ligusticum chuanxiong and Cnidium officinale were highly potent in the concentration of 10§¶/§¢.
4. On DPPH radical scavenging activity, both of Ligusticum chuanxiong and Cnidium officinale showed strong activity of approximately 10% of that assayed by BHT or BHA as controls.
5. Total amino acid content of Ligusticum chuansiong were higher than that of Cnidium officinale, total nitrogen content and crude protein content of Cnidium officinale were 5.8% and 8.5% higher than those of Ligusticum chuanxiong, respectively.
These results suggested that both of Ligusticum chuanxiong and Cunidium officinale showed antioxidative activity, especially Cnidium officinale showed higher activities than Ligusticum chuanxiong, indicating that Ligusticum chuanxiong could be replaced by Cnidium officinale. therefore, the continuous study on the antioxidative activity in vivo would be necessary
